Boosting Subscribers with Google Ads and YouTube

In today’s information-driven world, online platforms are a hub for marketing and gaining more subscribers and followers. In this post, I will walk you through my personal strategy to leverage Google Ads and YouTube to grow my email newsletter subscribers and YouTube channel followers.

Step 1: Call to Action

Firstly, I decided to make a special video specifically for YouTube and Google Ads. The main purpose of this video was to attract people's attention and get them to join my newsletter.

In this video, I showcased a new software I developed for our site called "Funky Free Ads". This software allows users to post up to 500 ads a day for free. As a reward for joining our newsletter, users get access to the software plus $597 worth of other programs. The main focus of the video was to create a strong call to action (CTA). It consisted of

Directly telling users what they are getting (free ad submission software)

Highlighting immediate benefits

Clearly stating what the software's capabilities are

With all these I clarified what I wanted them to do, click on the link, download the software and join the newsletter.

Step 2: Creating a Google Ad

The next step was launching the video using Google ads. You can go to Google Ads here to create an account and put in your credit card details as a funding source.

Here is a step-by-step guide on setting up the ad

Click on 'create a new campaign'

Choose to 'create a campaign without a goal's guidance'

Select custom video campaign

Opt for 'YouTube videos' under the campaign type

Decide on the campaign name, in this case, a part of the video title was used for simplicity

Determine your campaign total, set the duration for the ad, in this case, $100 for a full month was selected

Choose your audience's location and language. In my case, I selected 'all countries and territories' since I am targeting an international audience.

After setting all this up, the next crucial step is to find related videos. These are videos that will be put next to yours for viewers to click on, this helps in keeping viewers engaged with your channel. These should be high-quality videos which nicely complement your main video.

A couple examples of these related videos that I used were one showcasing another software that posts to 26 different sites and another based on a real case study of a client who significantly benefited from one of our classified ad website setups. Both of these videos were closely related to the main video and provided valuable information to the viewers.

Step 3: Ad Targeting

The most crucial phase of setting up the ad is determining who your target audience will be. It's important to ensure your target audience is not too vague or too broad.

You can base your audience on a number of things:

Those who have viewed any video from your channel

Those who have purchased from any of your websites

Those who are similar to all visitors based on your video and YouTube channel

Avoid being too vague in your targeting, for example, broadly targeting social media enthusiasts or sales and marketing jobs could end up not being your audience.

Step 4: Network Selection

When advertising a YouTube channel, it is important to uncheck the option for 'Partners on the Display Network'. This is because you're aiming to increase subscribers on your YouTube channel and thus you want your ad to only appear on YouTube.

Step 5: Creating the Ad

To create the ad, you need to provide the URL of the video you are promoting. After attaching the URL, you need to decide the type of ad you want, in this case, I opted for an in-feed ad since YouTube suggests that videos longer than 3 minutes don't usually perform well as skippable in-stream ads.

After selecting the ad type, create a compelling title for the ad and then click 'Create Campaign'.

Finally, bid the amount you are willing to pay for each click, in this case, I bid $0.02 and waited for the ad to be approved, and voila! The ad campaign was ready and running!

Results and Insights

From personal experience, using Google ads to promote YouTube videos pays off. I managed to gain 831 subscribers and over 35,000 views from this ad alone. All these views and subscribers inevitably translated into opt-in subscribers and eventually sales.

The best way to think about this strategy is as a process of ecosystem building. Even if you aren't making instant profit from the ads, you are expanding your audience base, increasing your visibility, credibility and ultimately, your sales will increase. To ensure repeated success, provide viewers with regular updates, new videos, new products and offerings.

In conclusion, Google ads combined with focused YouTube content can be a great way to draw traffic, build subscription lists, and increase viewership. This strategy gives you an unconventional yet effective route to building your own digital community.

`Remember that using this strategy requires long-term thinking and a dedicated budget. Each new follower is a potential customer in the ecosystem that you create.`

Remember, patience is key in this kind of marketing plan. Try it out and see how it can work for you.
